Today as I filed and buffed, I listened to Jackal, Devil’s Boneyard #1, by Harley Wylde.
Josie, our FMC is the sister of Tank, a member of the Dixie Reapers MC. Jackal, our MMC is a member of the Devil’s Boneyard MC and is a wandering Man Ho-Ho-Ho. They meet when she is having a rather dramatic moment at the Reapers’ clubhouse, and slip off for a weekend of passion. Fast forward two years and change and Jackal wanders in to the Reapers’ clubhouse, where Tank immediately punches him in the nose.

Turns out that that Weekend o’ Passion reaped (hehe) an unexpected benefit and Jackal is the unknowing father of Josie’s sickly little daughter. Jackal had been very adamant to Josie that he didn’t want children when they had the Weekend o’ Passion, so she decided not to tell him about the baby. They work out their relationship, have zexytime, and weather a health crisis with their daughter before a late book trafficking plot and a HEA.

Almost all of the action takes place with the Reapers, so this is only a Devil’s Boneyard book in that Jackal is a member of that club. Triggers include violence, threatened S.A., discussion of trafficking, language, explicit zexytime (which uses the P word and is about a 4.5/5 on the heat scale), and kidnapping. Tropes include One Night Stand, Secret Baby, Reformed Man Ho-Ho-Ho, Age Gap, and Surprise Pregnancy. I liked this story, loved that there was no third act kidnapping, and would give it a 5/5.
Listening to this audiobook was a good experience. Umi Markkanen was the narrator and she did an excellent job, as always. I could listen to that narrator read the traffic report and find it entertaining. She does a nice job with male and female voices, and she is clear and easy to understand. I’d give her a 5/5.
