Book of the Week: Deviant Heir by Lily Kline

Deviant Heir is a debut novel, and I would never have guessed that this was the author’s first book. I messaged the author through Booksprout (we have never actually met or talked before), saying “Please, Dear Author, I want some more”. And Lily Kline wrote back to me to say that there will be more books in the future and I am so excited. I’ve been so freaking lucky lately with ARCs. I think I have given more five star reviews in the past week than I had in the previous six. (Shameless plug- check out my blog for another excellent debut author, Cleo Browne).

Here’s my review:

This book was so good! I loved it. I’m not usually this enthusiastic about a stalker romance, but this is among the best.

The love story is intense, with the zexytime being reflective of that. It includes elements of BDSM, including consensual non con and d/s lite. And it’s totally, nuclear level hot.

Both main characters suffered from different forms of depression. The author depicted it so well it was scary. I have Bipolar Disorder, and the way depression was described in this book resonated with me, especially the descriptions of the soul-sucking type that the hero experienced. I don’t suffer from Anhedonia like the hero, in that I can feel and appreciate joy and pleasure in life, but all depression is soul draining (don’t worry- I’m fine, and stable, and this review really isn’t about my illness). I can empathize when he describes it like he does, as if he feels like he is dead already without his body knowing it. The lows of the depression and the high of the incredible love carried my emotions with it; I didn’t experience those emotions per se, but I experienced intense feelings because of this. And a good book makes you feel.

Actually, the hero is an antihero. You can love a hero for his good qualities. But an antihero forces you to fall in love with him because he will bathe the world in blood before dinner if someone hurts his woman at lunch.

Reading this book was an incredible experience. I’m very much looking forward to reading more from this author. Deviant Heir is available now on Amazon.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest, voluntary opinion. I am not compensated for my reviews.
